NFL Predictions & Picks Today

NFL predictions today, minus the tout theater: every play on this hub ships with a stated number, a fixed unit count and a reason you can audit. The full daily card across all sports lives on today’s best bets.

How the NFL desk works

No touts, no locks, no “guaranteed” anything. I spent years on the other side of the counter moving numbers when respected money hit the window, so this desk works like a trading book: every pick is a price opinion. If we can’t beat the closing number, the pick is worthless — so we publish a lean, a unit size, and the reasoning, and we grade ourselves against the close, not against one Sunday’s luck.

The math that governs everything: at standard -110 juice you need to win 52.38% of your bets to break even. A 55% win rate over a full season is elite. Anyone selling you 70% is selling you a story. Our target is a small, honest edge on a small, honest volume — typically 3 to 6 plays per NFL slate, never action for action’s sake. One unit is 1–2% of your bankroll; on a $1,000 roll that’s $10–20 a play. Boring is the point.

The 2026 season on the board

We’re three weeks from kickoff as I write this, and the calendar has a twist: the 2026 season opens on a Wednesday, September 9 — the first midweek kickoff in league history — with the defending Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks hosting the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl rematch on NBC. A day later the Rams and 49ers open their season in Melbourne, Australia, the first regular-season game ever played there. Two standalone games before the first Sunday even arrives — and two games where public money floods in on name value alone.

Week 1 lines have been up since May, which makes them a useful lesson in what an opener is worth. A snapshot of the board as of mid-August:

Week 1 spotLineWhat the desk notes
Chargers vs CardinalsChargers -11.5Largest spread of Week 1; double-digit NFL favorites are a public magnet, not an auto-bet
Ravens in divisional spotRavens -3.5Sitting just off the key number of 3 — the half-point is the whole bet
Chiefs openerChiefs -2.5On the other side of 3; shopping -2.5 vs -3 is worth real money over a season
Packers Week 1Packers -1.5Dead zone between 1 and 2.5 — minimal key-number value either way

Futures, for the record: the Rams sit as the Super Bowl 61 favorite around +550, with the Bills and Ravens clustered near +1000, the champion Seahawks behind them, and the Eagles in the next tier. Futures tie up your money for six months at a book hold north of 30% across the field — entertainment-sized bets only, and this desk sizes them that way.

Why 3 and 7 run the NFL

Roughly 15% of NFL games land on a margin of exactly 3, and about 9% land on 7. Those two numbers decide more bets than any storyline, rivalry or revenge narrative you’ll hear on pregame shows. Buying from -2.5 to -3 is worth several cents of expected value; the same half-point from -6.5 to -7 is worth far less, because 6 isn’t a common final margin. When our card says “favorite -3 only,” that’s not pickiness — the bet literally doesn’t exist at -3.5.

Final marginApprox. frequencyBetting meaning
3 points~15%The most valuable number on the board — pay up to be on the right side of it
7 points~9%Second key number; +6.5 to +7 is a meaningful buy
6 & 4 points~5% eachMinor key numbers — worth a small premium, not a major one
10 & 14 points~4% eachRelevant mostly for teasers and alt lines

The numbers that actually move NFL lines

Quarterback news

A starter-to-backup swing is worth 4 to 7 points depending on the drop-off. We track practice reports Wednesday through Friday — the market reacts to Sunday morning news, but the value is gone by then. If a “questionable” tag is still live on Friday, we size down or pass.

Rest & travel

Thursday road teams off a short week, and West Coast teams in 1pm ET slots, are the two schedule spots books price imperfectly early in the week. The Wednesday kickoff and the Melbourne game add a 2026 wrinkle: unprecedented rest splits the models have never seen.

Weather

Wind over 15 mph suppresses passing and totals more than rain or cold ever does. Snow is overpriced by the public; sustained wind is where the real total adjustment lives. We check forecasts Friday and again Sunday morning.

Divisional dogs

Road underdogs of 6+ in divisional games have historically covered at a premium — familiarity compresses margins. It’s one of the oldest situational leans in the book, and it still gets underpriced in October and November.

What a graded card looks like

Structure of a typical Sunday card (lines below are illustrative of how we log plays — the live numbers are on the daily desk):

MarketLineKey factorLeanUnits
Home favorite -3-110Line sitting on the key number; we got -2.5 earlyFavorite1.5u
Divisional road dog +7-105Divisional dogs of 6+ historically cover at a premiumUnderdog1u
Total 44.5-110Wind forecast 15+ mph, two run-heavy offensesUnder1u
Primetime moneyline+130Backup QB confirmed; market slow to adjustML dog0.5u

Unit sizing is the tell of a serious desk. Our scale runs 0.5u (speculative price shot) to 2u (maximum conviction). If a “capper” is betting 10 units on a coin flip, that’s marketing, not math.

FAQ — NFL picks desk

When do NFL picks go up?

The weekly card posts after Friday practice reports, once injury designations are official. Sunday morning scratches can kill a play — always re-check the published number against your book before betting.

Should I bet Week 1?

Small, if at all. Week 1 lines have been marinating since May, preseason tells you almost nothing about regular-season snap counts, and the books’ limits are lowest when uncertainty is highest. Our Week 1 card is historically our lightest of the season.

What’s the single biggest NFL betting mistake?

Ignoring the number. Chiefs -3 and Chiefs -3.5 are different bets with different expected values. Bettors who shop lines across three books beat bettors with better opinions and worse discipline, every season.

Are parlays ever +EV on NFL?

Almost never at standard pricing — each leg multiplies the book’s hold. If you play one for entertainment, size it like entertainment and check the true odds on the calculator first.

Do you sell picks?

No. The card is free, the reasoning is written down, and the grading is public. Anyone charging for “locks” is monetizing hope, not edge.
